How to Organize a Turkey Giveaway for Your Company

Turkey Giveaway

Every November, HR teams across the country face the same logistics problem: how do you get a fresh, high-quality turkey into the hands of every employee without the whole thing turning into chaos in the parking lot? A company turkey giveaway is one of the simplest, most visible ways to show appreciation at scale — but the difference between "employees still talk about it in March" and "never again" comes down to planning. Here's how to run one well.

Why Turkeys Still Work as an Employee Gift

Cash bonuses get spent on bills. Branded swag ends up in a drawer. A turkey shows up on the Thanksgiving table, in front of the whole family, as a visible reminder that the company thought of them. It's one of the few employee benefits with a built-in occasion attached to it, which is a big part of why the tradition has survived for generations in manufacturing, distribution, healthcare, and logistics companies with large hourly workforces.

Step 1: Decide on Quantity and Sizing Early

Most companies size turkeys based on household, not headcount — a single employee and an employee with a family of six shouldn't necessarily get the same bird. A workable approach:

  • Under 10 lb households or individuals: 10/14# turkeys

  • Average family size: 14/16#

  • Larger families: 16/20# or 20/24#

Collecting size preference (or letting employees self-select from two or three size tiers) avoids the common failure mode of running out of the popular size and having a pile of oversized turkeys left at 4pm.

Step 2: Lock In Your Supplier Months, Not Weeks, Ahead

Turkey supply tightens dramatically in the six weeks before Thanksgiving. Prices move, trucking capacity gets scarce, and suppliers start waitlisting new orders. Companies that order in August or September get better pricing, guaranteed delivery windows, and first pick of sizing. Companies that call in mid-November are often stuck with whatever is left. If you have multiple office or warehouse locations, this lead time matters even more, since freight needs to be coordinated across sites.

Step 3: Plan the Distribution Day Like an Event, Not an Afterthought

This is where most giveaways go wrong. A few things that separate a smooth day from a mess:

  • Individually boxed turkeys move faster through a line than loose birds and keep the whole event looking professional instead of like a warehouse pallet got cracked open.

  • Staggered pickup windows by department or shift prevent a single crush of people at 3pm on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

  • A dedicated loading zone with a few strong backs and hand trucks — nobody should be walking a 20 lb turkey across a parking lot solo.

  • Cold chain planning — turkeys need to stay refrigerated or frozen until the moment of pickup, which means knowing exactly when the truck arrives relative to when employees start showing up.

Step 4: Communicate Early and Often

Send the announcement at least two weeks out, include the pickup schedule, and remind people the week of. Companies with multi-site operations should designate a single point of contact per location so questions don't all funnel back to one HR inbox during the busiest week of the year.

Step 5: Have a Plan for Leftovers and No-Shows

Even with good planning, a few employees will miss their pickup window. Decide in advance whether unclaimed turkeys get redistributed, donated locally, or held for late pickup — and make sure whoever is running the event knows the answer before day-of.

The Logistics Are the Hard Part — That's Where We Come In

Loewy Foods has been supplying corporate turkey and ham programs since 1894, and sizing, boxing, and delivering a turkey giveaway is the entire business. We supply "Grade A" turkeys in 10/14#, 14/16#, 16/20#, and 20/24# sizes, with individually gift-boxed options in select markets, delivered nationwide — whether that's one location or twenty.
